Be a paw-some pet owner and register your dog
Published on July 08, 2025
Dog registration renewal notices landed in Horowhenua letterboxes and inboxes during the first week of July.
Any dog owners with their noses to the ground will have updated their details, so the next step, after they receive their notice, is to register their canine companions by 31 July 2025 to avoid a late fee penalty.
For those who carefully plan their pup’s outfits, you will be eager to know that this year’s dog tags are red - the colour of power, class, and confidence, suitable for any catwalk (or should we say dogwalk?).
Horowhenua District Mayor Bernie Wanden says dog registration fees are important in providing animal control in the Horowhenua District.
“Some of this cost is covered by rates, as there is benefit to the wider community. The rest is covered by registration fees, which ensure dog owners cover their fair share of the cost,” he says.
“The fees cover the welfare of dogs and keep our community safe from dog nuisance. They help us investigate complaints, provide dog safety education, provide a dog pound and shelter services, rehome stray dogs, and more. So be an exemplary owner and register your furry friends.”
Dog registration renewal emails and letters have been sent. It is quick and easy to register your dog online at www.horowhenua.govt.nz/pawsonline, or you can do so in person or by post. You can also elect to receive future registration renewal forms via email – the environment will thank you!
Payments received after 31 July 2025 for the 2025/2026 financial year will incur a 50% late penalty fee. Dog owners who believe they may have difficulty paying their dog registration fees are encouraged to contact Council on 06 366 0999 or at enquiries@horowhenua.govt.nz to discuss possible options.
