Council actively manages weeds in our district for various reasons, particularly focusing on eradicating them in critical conservation areas along the coast, scrublands and sand dunes, as well as in restoration sites where emerging native plants are threatened by invasive species.
Council also addresses invasive weeds in our quality sports surfaces, parks, and reserves, and applies fungicide to our significant rose garden beds. We prioritise tackling the most problematic weeds in these sensitive areas.
If you're unsure about a plant on your property being a pest or weed and need advice on handling it, reach out to the Horizons Regional Council's Biosecurity Team. With over 300 plant pest species in the region, they can provide guidance on identification and control.
For more information and a A-Z of pest plants visit Horizons Pest Plant Control page.
Each year Council periodically sprays to control vegetation on its road reserve areas, within water channels and side drains, parks, reserves and pavements.
If you don't want herbicides sprayed near your property, you can apply to have it listed on the Council's No Spray Register to avoid spraying directly outside.

Urban berm mowing will be stopped from 1 July 2024 as part of the Long Term Plan 2024-2044 to save $240,000 annually. Residents will now be responsible for maintaining roadside berms, with Council continuing to manage weed control around poles and assets. Those unable to maintain their berm can hire a contractor or seek assistance from Work and Income New Zealand.
