The Horowhenua District Council manages seven cemeteries throughout the district, located in Foxton, Koputaroa, Levin, Manakau and Shannon.  We also hold historical material on each of the districts cemeteries as well as burial records.

Council aims to provide a number of services for burials to meet a range of bereavement needs, a respectful environment and professional assistance to support family and friends of passed loved ones.

Cemetery Offices

Our Council Offices in Levin and Foxton manage bookings and information on all aspects of the cemeteries, including how to arrange burials and for general cemetery information.

Council holds in perpetuity cemetery records for Council administered cemeteries.  Records date back to 1867 for the District's earliest cemetery and depending on the volume of information requested a search fee may apply.

Cemetery and Headstone Maintenance

Maintenance and Sexton duties are provided by the Districts Parks and Open Spaces Contractor and responsibilities include keeping the cemeteries in a tidy and presentable manner, as well as managing burials.

Cemetery maintenance is provided on all plots in cemeteries; however headstones and tombstone tops are the responsibility of families.  In order to do maintenance to any headstone or tombstone a permit must first be obtained from Council.

Memorial and Floral Tributes

A local monumentalist or funeral director can advise you on the headstone and monument options available.

Floral tributes and adornments are permitted on the memorial headstone bases only in the lawn areas of the Avenue, Foxton, Manakau and Shannon Cemeteries.  Adornments and tomb tops are permitted in the old tomb top areas of the districts cemeteries.

Open Hours

The cemeteries are open from 7.30am until dusk year - round.  Ihakara, Koputaroa, Old Levin Cemetery and Shannon Cemetery are accessible to pedestrians only.
