Your guide to Horowhenua District Council services and facilities

Te kōrero o te Koro Matua - Mayor’s Message

Haere mai ki Horowhenua! I am delighted to welcome you to Horowhenua.

Firstly, I would like to acknowledge our Iwi partners, Muaūpoko - Ngāi Tara o Mua Ūpoko o te Ika a Maui and Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga.

Our district covers over 1,000 square kilometres, stretching from just south of Himatangi to just north of Ōtaki. It comprises nine townships, including our three main centres, Levin | Taitoko, Foxton | Te Awahou and Shannon | Otāuru. Geographically, we’re fortunate to have the majestic Tararua Range in the east and long sandy beaches along our western coast, as well as some of New Zealand’s most productive agricultural land.

It’s an exciting time to be here. Horowhenua is growing rapidly with a diverse population of just over 36,000. Our district’s diversity makes Horowhenua a vibrant place to live, and there’s always a lot going on here. I encourage you to enjoy our many events and activities, get involved with local clubs and groups that interest you, and become a true part of your local community.

Whether you have just moved here or lived here your whole life, this guide will help you get the most out of your Council and connect with your wider community.

It provides much of the practical information you’ll need to make our district your home, as well as plenty of helpful pointers to further information resources about Council services and facilities.

I trust you’ll find it useful. If you have questions, would like more information or need any further assistance, you’ll find a friendly team ready to help at any of Horowhenua District Council’s customer service centres. Our contact details are listed on the next page.
