Stage One of Levin Water Supply Upgrade to Start

Preparation work on upgrading the Levin Water Treatment Plant (LWTP) has started, with design work done and the purchase of land close to the current site.

A large storage facility along with a new treatment plant has been identified as the best and most economically efficient way to provide safe drinking water in times of high river turbidity.

The water storage project was adopted by Council in its 10–Year Plan for work to start in this current year and built over the next two financial years.

The need to upgrade Levin’s current facility became necessary following the amendment to the Health Act last year where the Government made it mandatory that water supplies operated by Council must meet certain standards at all times.

Changes to Monument Heights Proposed at Cemeteries

Feedback is sought on a proposal to change the maximum height and design of headstones and monumental work in Horowhenua District Cemeteries.

At present, headstone heights in all cemeteries in the District are restricted to a maximum height of 750mm.

Parks Assets Officer Doug Tate says some cemeteries have historical stonework exceeding two metres in height but suggests the current height no longer reflects families' desires to mourn and commemorate the lives of lost love ones.

"We regularly receive calls from Funeral Directors and Monumentalists who have requests from families wanting higher and different headstones”, he says.

“This is simply a reflection of peoples changing desires for new styles and materials”.

Kerbside Recycling to Cut Bag Use

A District-wide kerbside recycling scheme for urban households will be implemented to reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfills.

Under the scheme each household will have a recycling crate in which all recyclable materials can be deposited. The first of the recycling crate pickups starts on Friday, 6 November 2009.

Council will do away with the current scheme of requiring only one type of material per week on a rotating basis, and allow all recyclables to be placed in the crate.

The Government started collecting a waste levy from 1 July 2009 on each tonnage of waste. Half of that money can be reclaimed by councils for waste minimisation schemes.
