Horowhenua District Council continues to respond to the impacts of recent severe weather, including power outages and pressure on water and wastewater systems across parts of the district.

We know some residents, particularly in rural areas, have been without power for some time. This has been difficult, especially over the holiday period. Thank you for your patience, care for one another and support for crews working to restore services.

Spoiled food disposal. Free service for affected residents

To support households impacted by power outages, Council has arranged free disposal of spoiled food waste for residents in:

  • Foxton
  • Foxton Beach
  • Shannon
  • Ōpiki
  • Tokomaru

Drop-off will be available on:

  • Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Foxton
  • Sunday in Shannon

Proof of address is required. Spoiled food must be separated from general rubbish and double-bagged where possible. Further details and locations will be shared through Council channels.

Power and network restoration

Electra has advised the following:

  • Restoration work is well underway in Tokomaru and the majority of the township is expected to be restored by about 4pm today.
  • Restoration work is underway in Ōpiki. There is not yet an estimated time for restoration and further updates will be provided when available.
  • Power has been restored to most of Shannon township. Some customers south of Shannon remain without supply. There is not yet an estimated restoration time.
  • Power has been partially restored in Manakau. Some customers may still be without power due to isolated faults. Anyone without supply in this area should contact Electra on 0800 567 876.
  • Isolated faults remain across the district, affecting single homes or small groups of properties. If you are still without power, please contact Electra on 0800 567 876.

We acknowledge our rural communities, many of whom have been hardest hit. We understand the disruption this causes and appreciate the continued patience and resilience of residents.

Residents and visitors are still urged to conserve water

Back-up generators are operating where required, including at the Tokomaru Water Treatment Plant.

Residents and visitors in Foxton, Foxton Beach and Tokomaru are encouraged to continue conserving water to allow reservoirs to recover.

Foxton and Foxton Beach remain on Water Conservation Level 2. This means reducing non-essential outdoor water use and being mindful indoors. Thank you to everyone already helping. Your efforts make a real difference.

Welfare support

If you or someone you know needs assistance, particularly if medically dependent on power or struggling with essential supplies, please contact Horowhenua District Council on 06 366 0999.
