A Certificate for Public Use is used to certify that premises or parts of premises affected by building work are safe to be occupied by members of the public prior to building work being signed off as being complete (ie until a Code Compliance Certificate is issued).
It is an offence to allow members of the public to occupy or use a building (or part of a building) that is affected by building work without either Compliance Certificate (CCC) or Certificate of Public Use (CPU).
Certificates for Public Use are not required for private homes or other buildings the public does not have access to.
You will need a valid email address and a password to register to use the portal. Please visit www.simpli.govt.nz to register. Once you have registered, you can apply for a Certificate for Public Use on www.simpli.govt.nz/apply-online, even if your original building consent wasn't applied for through this portal.
The Simpli portal is an initiative set up to make applying for building consents simpler and faster. This service offers a few exciting features including the ability to track the progress of your application, to collaborate with colleagues on applications and also to use the same information to apply to different councils.
The application form has a number of parts and it is important that all sections are completed. You will also be required to upload the documentation relevant to your project. Applications will not be accepted if any of the information is missing.
