What does the future of the Levin Town Centre look like, and how did we get here?

A new interactive exhibition at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō invites the community to step back in time, explore the present, and imagine the future of Levin’s town centre.

Open throughout June, the exhibition brings together more than a century of local history through heritage photographs, stories, videos, and interactive displays that showcase the evolution of Levin | Taitoko and the community’s vision for what comes next.

Drawing on historic images from Kete Horowhenua dating back to the late 1800s, visitors can discover how the town has grown and changed over generations, from the rich cultural and environmental history of the area surrounding Lake Horowhenua, through to Levin's emergence as a centre for trade, innovation and community life.

At the centre of the exhibition is the story of transformation.

A dedicated timeline traces the Levin Town Centre Transformation programme, showcasing the planning, partnerships, community conversations, and key milestones that have helped shape the future direction of the town centre.

Horowhenua District Mayor Bernie Wanden says the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the town's shared history while considering the opportunities ahead.

When you look through these historic images and stories, you can see that Levin has never stood still. Every generation has contributed to shaping the place we know today.

"This exhibition celebrates that journey. It reminds us where we've come from, recognises the work happening now, and encourages us to think about the kind of town centre we want to leave for future generations."

Alongside the heritage displays and timeline, visitors can share their thoughts on interactive community voice boards, watch videos documenting progress over time, and view an aspirational video that challenges viewers to imagine the possibilities for Levin's future.

Levin Town Centre Community Steering Group member Clint Grimstone says the display highlights the important role the community has played throughout the journey.

This exhibition shows that transformation doesn't happen overnight. What people see today is the result of years of conversations, ideas, feedback and collaboration."

"The community has helped shape the direction of the town centre, and we're encouraging people to visit, reflect on the journey so far and share their aspirations for what's next."

The exhibition will be on display at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō throughout June and is free for the public to visit.
