Diwali 2026

Everyone is invited to come together this November to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, with a free community event at Gladys Taylor Park on Saturday 21 November.

Diwali brings people of all ages and backgrounds together to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and the renewal of life. It is a time for family, friendship and reflection, and this year’s event will again showcase the culture, colour and energy that make the festival so special.

Running from 5pm to 9pm, the free, family friendly event promises an evening of performances, food and fun. The lineup features a mix of traditional and contemporary performances, from classical Indian dance to Bollywood routines and local acts that will keep the crowd entertained through the evening.

Mayor Bernie Wanden says Diwali has become a highlight on the district’s events calendar and a genuine celebration of community.

“Diwali is one of those events that brings people together. You can feel the energy and sense of community from the moment it starts.

“It is a chance to share food, music and traditions, and to celebrate the people who make Horowhenua what it is. Whether you have been every year or you are coming for the first time, you’ll be made welcome.

“Council's own Community Wellbeing Strategy identifies Culture as one of its priorities. We know that celebrating and valuing cultural diversity is essential for our community's richness and vibrancy.

“I encourage people to come along, enjoy the festivities, and celebrate with friends, whānau and neighbours.”

Whether you have been to Diwali before or are coming for the first time, it’s an experience not to be missed. Gather your friends, whānau and neighbours, and join a night filled with light, laughter and connection.
