Council monitoring severe weather system-precautionary steps underway

Horowhenua District Council is closely monitoring a severe weather system forecast to impact parts of the lower North Island over the next 24 to 48 hours.

While the heaviest rainfall is currently forecast for areas outside the district, including the Tararua Range and eastern Wairarapa, Horowhenua is expected to experience strong southwest winds and periods of heavy rain as the system moves through.

A regional pre-emptive state of emergency has been declared.  This declaration covers the entire Manawatū-Whanganui Region and applies as of 6.37pm Sunday 15 February. 

NEMA has advised that some schools in the wider Manawatū-Whanganui Region may need to close temporarily. At this stage, there is no information indicating that schools in Horowhenua are affected. NEMA will be in touch directly with schools if any closures are required. We will continue to monitor the situation and share updates if anything changes.

As a precautionary measure, Kimberley Reserve has been closed and campers have been evacuated. Council thanks those affected for their cooperation and understanding.

Council’s Emergency Management Incident Management Team is on standby and monitoring the situation closely. Preparations are underway should conditions deteriorate.

If rainfall intensifies, Opiki Road is likely to close, and the Moutua Flood Gate may be activated to manage river levels and reduce flood risk. Council contractors, lines crews, and after-hours staff are on standby and ready to respond if required.

Residents are encouraged to take simple steps to prepare, including clearing drains and gutters, securing outdoor furniture, charging devices, and avoiding unnecessary travel in exposed or flood-prone areas. People living near streams, rivers, or low-lying areas should remain alert to rising water levels.
