People across Horowhenua are being urged to prepare now for Cyclone Vaianu, which is forecast to affect the lower North Island on Sunday.

MetService New Zealand has placed Manawatū, including Palmerston North and Horowhenua, under a strong wind watch from 11am on Sunday until 6am on Monday. There is a high chance of an upgrade to a strong wind warning with the potential for damaging winds and disruption.

Mayor Bernie Wanden says now is the time for people to make sure they are ready.

“We are asking residents to take this weather event seriously and prepare now, while the weather is still calm.”

“Strong winds and heavy rain can cause significant disruption, including power outages, fallen trees, surface flooding and dangerous driving conditions. A bit of preparation now can make a big difference later.”

“Please secure anything outside that could blow away, check your drains and gutters, make sure you have essential supplies on hand, and keep up to date with the latest forecasts and advice.”

“If you do not need to travel on Sunday, it is worth reconsidering your plans and staying safe at home. Now is also a good time to check in with whānau, neighbours or anyone who may need a bit of extra support to get ready.”

Council’s Emergency Management Incident Management Team is on standby and is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to work with emergency management partners and other agencies as the forecast develops.

Residents are encouraged to take practical steps now, including:

  • Securing outdoor furniture, trampolines, bins and other loose items
  • Clearing gutters and drains where it is safe to do so
  • Bringing pets inside and moving stock from low-lying or flood-prone areas
  • Charging phones and power banks
  • Making sure they have enough food, water, medication and other essentials
  • Having a grab bag and a plan ready in case conditions worsen

People should also keep an eye on local conditions and avoid unnecessary travel if the weather deteriorates.

Updates will be shared through Council’s Facebook page, website and other official channels as needed.
