To either side of the Waitarere township lies a privately owned production forest that stretches over 13km from Hokio Beach to the mouth of the Manawatu River. The public are free to walk and bike the forest roads and tracks provided they respect forest operations, restrictions and stay away from active worksites. The forest is home to an annual marathon event which had it's 20th anniversary in 2016.
