Horowhenua District Council has closely inspected Levin’s water network and has discovered it will be necessary to replace some pipes in some areas. Problems identified include age of pipe, frequent repair and to cater for future development.
Which areas are affected?
The following areas will be affected:
Queen Street – roadway parking outside Pak’N’Save
Queen and Cambridge Street corners – Mitre 10 corner, Tony’s Tyre Service Corner, Levin and Horowhenua Veterinary Centre corner.
Queen and Cambridge roundabout.
How will the pipes be replaced?
Horowhenua District Council’s Horowhenua Alliance will use a mix of open trench and direct drilling. The roads will remain open most of the time during the period. There will be occasions when the road will be restricted to one lane and footpaths may be closed. Alternative pedestrian routes will be identified and clearly marked in the events of footpaths being closed.
Council staff and the Horowhenua Alliance team will work with local businesses, residents and road users to minimise the impacts of the project.
When will the work take place?
Most work will take place from Mondays to Fridays between 7am and 5pm on weekdays and occasionally on Saturdays between October 2019 and December 2019. In some cases, it may be necessary to carry out some evening work in order to lessen the impact on local businesses.
Why not just repair the pipes?
Repairs may remove defects for the short-term but they will not necessarily solve the issues long-term. Based on the significant problems identified and future demand, it is best to completely replace and upgrade the pipes.
