Horowhenua Alliance will carry out smoke testing of Shannon, Mangaore and Tokomaru's sewer systems from Monday 1 February until further notice.
What smoke testing involves
Smoke testing involves smoke being pumped into Council’s sewers. Crews then monitor where smoke escapes the sewer system.
We use smoke testing to locate breaks and defects in the sewer system. The smoke also shows where storm water and other surface water enter the sewer system. Information from the tests will be used to improve your sewer services and may reduce costs to utility customers.
The smoke we use is a harmless white vapour which is safe for humans, animals and plants. It leaves no residue or stains. The smoke has an odour, but in places with adequate ventilation you will be able to see and smell the smoke for only a few minutes.
You may notice smoke rising from the ground outside your home during testing. Because your plumbing is connected to the sewers, some smoke may enter your home or workplace if:
- Vents connected to your building's sewer pipes are inadequate, defective, or improperly installed
- Traps under sinks, tubs, basins, showers and other drains are dry, defective, improperly installed, or missing
- Pipes, connections and seals of the wastewater drain system in and under your buildings are damaged, defective, have plugs missing, or are improperly installed.
What to do if smoke enters your home or business
If smoke enters your home or business, contact a member of the smoke testing crew working in your area. The crew member will check where the smoke has entered your building. Your cooperation will be appreciated.
How you'll be notified
You'll be sent a letter to tell you smoke testing will take place near your home 48 hours before testing. You do not need to be home during testing.
Please note Horowhenua Alliance staff may need to access your property to carry out the tests. All staff will carry visible identification.
