Owners of impounded dogs can now make an appointment to collect their pets at any time between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Previously, dog owners were obliged to collect impounded dogs between 12.30 and 1:30pm or between 3:30 and 4pm.

Horowhenua District Council Compliance Manager, Vai Miller, says meeting those hours was a struggle for some owners.

“The new appointment-based system offers a more flexible service. People can now arrange to collect impounded dogs at a time that better suits their needs,” she said.

Mrs Miller said the change also improves safety.

“With appointments, Council can ensure there are always two Animal Control officers on site during the owner’s visit, and coordinate for dogs to be released outside the dog pound gates if necessary.”

Under the new system, the gates at the dog pound will be closed, and owners wishing to make an appointment to collect an impounded dog should contact Horowhenua District Council on (06) 366 0999 or enquiries@horowhenua.govt.nz
