Vibrant chorus box art applications opening
Published on July 14, 2021
Horowhenua District Council is looking for local artists to spruce up three Chorus Boxes in the district.
Council has collaborated with Chorus and Keep New Zealand Beautiful for this project. The aim is to add colour and vibrancy to the environment by painting the otherwise ordinary boxes. The boxes available are located;
- 61 Vogel Street, Shannon
- 51a Johnstone Street, Foxton
- Waitārere Rise, Waitārere Beach.
The initiative started in 2010 in Auckland to brighten up the boxes, which are often subject to vandalism. Since then, the initiative has spread nationwide, coming to Horowhenua in 2014.
Vicky Millman, a local artist who has painted four Chorus boxes in the district said it is a beautiful initiative.
‘‘Every piece of artwork has a story or meaning behind it’’ she said. ‘’ It is also an opportunity that connects you with the community. Everyone stops to have a chat with you and I have actually made some long-term connections with those I have spoken to.’’
Artists must be 15 years or older. Submissions open Monday 2 August at 8am and close on Friday 27 August at 5pm. A panel considers applications and successful artists will be contacted.
Entries need to include a design, along with a 500-word explanation about the meaning of the design.
Artists are remunerated for their time and materials as outlined on the website. Remuneration will depend on the size of the artwork.
