2013 Youth Scholarships

The 2013 Civic Awards Ceremony, held at Te Takere on 3 December and hosted by Horowhenua District Mayor Brendan Duffy, celebrated and acknowledged the successes of a number of young people, and the significant contribution made by volunteers over many years to our community.

Horowhenua Youth Scholarships were presented to 12 young people.  The recipients were:

  • James Gilroy (Sport) - James has had a long history within the field of Canoe Polo, starting at school and continuing on now after finishing college. James has also coached canoe polo at Horowhenua College for two years, and won the Commitment and Service to Canoe Polo award in 2010 and 2011 while at College, as well as the Pennant Award for Outstanding Canoe Polo Achievement in 2011. 
  • Gemma Hill (Art & Culture) - Gemma has been the torch bearer for Horowhenua Stage Challenge for the last two years. She was the Horowhenua College Stage Challenge Producer in both 2012 and 2013 and her performance in this role has received several awards. Her ability to plan, coordinate and deliver from start to finish in this management position on such large productions is a testament to her passion and hardworking spirit.   
  • Caitlin Huria (Sport) - Although only of Intermediate age, Caitlin has accomplished an impressive list of feats in 2013. Her ability to perform across disciplines is a testament to her passion for sport. Her achievements include playing in the Levin Intermediate A Netball squad, Levin Under 13 and Under 15 Girls Basketball, Levin Amateur Football Club grade 11 representative, Girls Rugby 7s, Levin Titans Touch Rugby and Horowhenua Kapiti Under 13s Girls Touch Rugby Representative.  Caitlin is sure to continue her sporting achievements when she begins college next year. 
  • Kara Imrie (Art & Culture) - Kara has involved herself in a number of public performance disciplines including theatre, jazz and ballet.   She was the advanced Level 1 Ballet International Dance Teachers Association New Zealand Scholarship Award Winner in 2012.  Kara is hoping to use her background as a platform for teaching in the future and already holds a Pre-Associate Level 1 Teachers IDTA rating with merit. 
  • Zoe Jacobs (Community) - Zoe Jacobs has made a highly positive impact on young parents of the Horowhenua District. A full time mum to her 5 year old son Brock, Zoe has solidly provided 1 on 1 peer support to young parents via the Levin Early Years Hub over 2012 and 2013.   As a mother, a student, a teacher, and a carer Zoe has given up more than most and continues to devote herself to the Horowhenua community. 
  • Enique Mae Karaitiana-Lucas (Sport) - Enique has been recognised as a natural athlete and leader. Her contribution to Basketball and Rugby in particular deserves acknowledgement. She represents New Zealand in both the Horowhenua-Kapiti and the National Under 15 Mixed Touch Rugby teams.  She has also been a coach for Junior Basketball in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and was a coach for Foxton Primary Touch Rugby. 
  • Rebecca Moynihan (Sport) - Rebecca is known for her prowess in the swimming pool and currently holds two Manawatu Swimming records.  Rebecca reached the finals of three categories at the Victorian Stage Age Group Swimming Champs in Melbourne this year and was also selected for the Lower North Island All Stars Zonal Swimming Team. Rebecca has achieved countless placements at National and International Swimming events  
  • Dana Murdoch (Academic) - Dana has had a strong history of Academic Achievement that dates back to 2008, when she was awarded top student of Ohau School.  She has also involved herself in the community by being a peer support leader for her tutor class in 2013 and committee member for the 2013 Horowhenua College Leavers Dinner. Dana also has sporting achievements within the fields of Water Polo and Hockey. 
  • Kelsey Renner (Academic) - Kelsey has an impressive list of Academic Achievements from throughout her high school years which demonstrate a diverse set of skills. She most recently obtained NCEA level 2 with Excellence endorsements in Biology and Art.  This year Kelsey was also nominated for, and attended the Otago University Advanced School Sciences Academy. 
  • Britney Rolston (Sport) - Britney has a long list of accomplishments in the sport of Canoe Polo. She has been a player, a captain, a coach and a referee for groups as humble as junior school teams, and as inspiring as the New Zealand Women's Canoe Polo team which took home Bronze at the Oceania games in 2013.  Her goal is to head over to France in 2014 to represent NZ at the Canoe Polo World Championships, so watch out for Britney in years to come. 
  • Kyle Williams-Simeon (Community) - Kyle has spread himself far and wide across the Horowhenua community in his college years. He was a referee for Foxton’s annual local years 5 to 8 football in 2012 and 2013 and plays in the Manawatu College first eleven Soccer team.  In 2012 Kyle was acknowledged as the winner of the Barry Richardson Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to the Community at Manawatu College and his continued devotion to the Horowhenua District is inspiring. 
  • Lisa Andrea Williams (Sport) - Lisa is currently at Horowhenua College and has excelled within her sports fields over a number of years. Within strengths in both Netball and Basketball, Lisa captained the Horowhenua College Senior Girls Basketball Captain which won the LBA college cup and was also captain of NZ Pacific Basketball team in 2013 after being in the Manawatu Under 15 and Under 17 teams for four years running.  Lisa won the Manawatu Standard Sports Award in 2013 for Basketball and has also won a Horowhenua College Sports Award for Netball this year.
