Elections 2010
The Local Government elections for the Horowhenua District Council (including Mayor, Councillors and the Foxton Community Board), Horizons Regional Council and the Midcentral District Health Board are held every three years, always on the second Saturday in October. In 2010 they were held on 9 October.
Elections for the Horowhenua District Council included the following:
1. Election of Mayor of the Horowhenua District Council
2. Election of ten Councillors on a Ward basis, as follows:
- Levin - Five
- Waiopehu - Two
- Kere Kere - Two
- Miranui - One
3. Election of five members of the Foxton Community Board.

Voting System
The elections were held by postal vote. All elections will be conducted using First Past the Post (FPP) system, except for the MidCentralDistrict Health Board elections which were conducted under the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system. You can find more information on the STV system at www.stv.govt.nz.
The FPP electoral system consists of the following:
- Electors vote by indicating their preferred candidate(s) with a tick.
- Voters must not tick more than the number of places to be filled.
- The candidate that receives the most votes is declared the winner, regardless of the proportion of votes that candidate obtained.
