Rubbish & Recycling
Council operates a solid waste (rubbish) disposal facility for residents through a kerbside collection service, plus the operation of a Landfill, with Waste Transfer Stations in Foxton and Shannon.
A recycling operation is also carried out in conjunction with the kerbside collection or through one of the seven recycling stations located throughout the District.
Recycling facilities are also available at the Waste Transfer Stations.
LPG Cylinders, Heaters and Barbeques
The Ministry of Consumer Affair's Energy Safety Service has information on safety with gas appliances and LPG cylinder testing.
Kerbside Collection Service
A district-wide kerbside recycling scheme for urban households will be implemented to reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfills. Under this scheme each household will have a recycling crate in which all recyclable materials can be deposited. The first of the recycling crate pickups started on Friday, 6 November 2009.
Council has done away with the old scheme of requiring only one type of material per week on a rotating basis, and will allow all recyclables to be placed in the crate.
The Government started collecting a waste levy from 1 July 2009 on each tonnage of waste. Half of that money can be reclaimed by councils for waste minimisation schemes.
Some collection days have been changed to match the recycling day. Please check the list to see if your day has changed.
Collection Days
- Monday – Foxton, Foxton Beach, Waitarere Beach, Waikawa Beach.
- Tuesday – Hokio Beach, Hokio Sands Road, and everything to the west side of Oxford Street, Levin
