Dangerous Goods Licences

Council no longer issues dangerous goods licenses.

Control of most dangerous goods transferred to the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 (HSNO) on 1 April 2004.  HSNO is administered by the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA). ERMA’s website has more information regarding HSNO and the controls that now replace dangerous goods licenses.

Who controls Hazardous Substances

Council has authority for enforcement of HSNO in private dwellings and public places. A number of other organisations are involved in HSNO enforcement including Occupational Safety and Health at all work places and the Land Transport Safety Authority when being transported.

Disposal of Hazardous Substances

All hazardous substances including garden chemicals need to be disposed of carefully. Information on disposal facilities for Horowhenua are covered in the Rubbish and Recycling.

Hazardous Substance Safety at Home

The chemicals and pesticides section of the ACC website provides important information on child safety and emergency procedures.

LPG Cylinders, Heaters and Barbeques

Refer to the Ministry of Economic Development's Energy Safety Service for information on safety with gas appliances and LPG cylinder testing.
