The Eketahuna Express

The Eketahuna Express.

Travel with Steam Incorporated north from Kapiti via the spectacular Manawatu Gorge to the Tararua and north Wairarapa regions.

Select from either Eketahuna (Mt Bruce & Middleton, or lunch), Opaki (north of Masterton), or Masterton as your destination. An ideal Xmas gift!

The train will include a buffet counter selling burgers, sausages, sandwiches, drinks and snacks, and a souvenir counter for all sorts of railway and steam memorabilia.

Destination options

The following destination options are available:

Option 1 – Pukaha Mt Bruce Wildlife Centre & Middleton Model Railway (alight at Eketahuna)

Pukaha Mt Bruce is New Zealand's National Wildlife Centre for breeding threatened species.

Learn about how Pukaha is now home to endangered species living in the wild; experience tranquil bushwalks through primal rainforest; check out kaka, New Zealand's forest parrots and their crazy antics at 3pm; plus many kokako, kereru, and tui.

New for this visit will be the recently completed state of the art Kiwi House and hopefully see feeding of Kiwi chicks. Savour light meals, espresso and inside/outside dining. Alight at Eketahuna. Bus transfer from train to Pukaha Mt Bruce included. Adults $28. Child $13.

During the Mt Bruce visit it is also possible to visit the nearby Middleton Model Railway (over 300 metres of track) and Cwmglyn Farmhouse cheeses. This attraction has featured on Country Calendar. Admission included above.

Option 2 – Lunch at Eketahuna

Alight at Eketahuna to enjoy lunch at the Eketahuna Inn. On offer is a selection of mains plus dessert. Expected menu options include NZ Sirloin Steak, Lamb shanks with kumara mash, a Moroccan chicken salad and fish & chips. Cost $32.

After lunch there is plenty of time to stroll around the Eketahuna village and get a selfie alongside the giant Kiwi before rejoining the train for the journey home.

Option 3 – Opaki Vineyard

A few kilometres before reaching Masterton we will stop the train adjacent to the Paper Road Vineyard. The train literally stops at the gate into the vineyard. You will have time to spend an hour enjoying a glass of wine and a stroll through the vineyard. Expected to be on offer will be their Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and a Rose. The train will pick you up on the return trip from Masterton.

Option 4 – Masterton

Just enjoy a full day of nostalgic steam travel. This is a rare chance to travel on the rail line north of Masterton that now only sees a handful of trains each year, which are mostly excursions trains.

One Way Travel

We also have a limited number of seats available for “One way” travel to or from Masterton.
