Certificates of Recognition Recipients 2009
People who make a difference in our community were honoured at the Civic Awards Ceremony held by Horowhenua District Council on 25 November 2009.
Since its inception in 1995, many citizens of the Horowhenua have been duly acknowledged for their long and meritorious services through the Horowhenua District Council’s Civic Honours Award system.
Volunteers make up a large part of the District’s workforce, working tirelessly in the many fields of community service - making the Horowhenua a great place in which to live. To service a community of 31,000 people we rely heavily on our volunteers. The awards are a way of saying thank you to these people who enrich our communities.
Here, we feature those who received Certificates of Recognition.
Peter Moody’s service to recreation and sport has to be acknowledged, in particular his contribution to Horowhenua Cricket over many years as a player and administrator.
Mr Moody was a bowler of medium pace and an above average batsman as a member of the Levin Cricket Club, and then the Levin Old Boys after his club merged with Old Boys in the mid 1970s.
However, it’s his administration and support to cricket starting in 1972 when he was appointed to the Central District’s Executive where the real understanding of the extent of his voluntary service becomes evident. He was the CD chairman from 1979 to 1986, served as CD representative on the New Zealand Cricket Board from 1986 to 1992, a representative on the Turf Culture Institute, Convenor of pitches and grounds for the 1992 World Cup, has managed World Cup teams, and was a match referee for two World Cup games. He is now Patron of the Central Districts Cricket Association which is affiliated to Cricket New Zealand.
He has also been a Past President of Horowhenua-Kapiti Cricket Association and Central Districts, and players in both regions, in particular youth, have been the benefactors of Mr Moody’s commitment to the sport of cricket.
Jan-Maree Hayes volunteers in both community service and sports and recreation categories, acknowledging her involvement in a variety of community groups her family became involved in.
She initially supported as a parent the Foxton Gymnastics Club followed by five year’s service as honorary secretary, as well as with the Foxton Athletics Club in the roles of president, secretary and committee member.
She has been an active member of SOCKS, Coley Street School PTA, and treasurer of the Te Awahou Scout Group, continuing the roles when her own children had passed through them.
Mrs Hayes also spent 11 years with Playcentre, has been on Girl Guide and Plunket committees along with strong support for the Plunket Society and Plunket Mothers, helping with practical support of young mothers.
Dennis Cole works quietly and unobtrusively doing the spade work on behalf of groups and organisations without fuss or bother. He has done so for years, firstly as a member of the Levin Waiopehu Lions Club from 1974 to 1990, including roles as secretary, project convenor, and vice president.
He was the secretary for the Keep Levin Beautiful Committee for seven years, and when the organisation was re-established in 2007, he again took up the role of secretary. He has an outstanding pride in the town where he was born and grew up.
Other voluntary work Mr Cole has been involved in has included the Levin Crime Prevention Camera Trust, Adopt an Anzac – Horowhenua District War Memorials project, Great Forest Marathon where he was the official starter for five years, and the Levin Little Theatre Society where, since 2001, he has held the position of President.
Tony Cottle has gone the extra mile for the Shannon Community as a long standing member of the Shannon Progressive Association. Having joined in 1973 he has worked for the betterment of Shannon and the District.
He was responsible for the first four events of the highly successful annual Christmas Parade, and has undertaken the promotional work associated with the spectacular annual Car and Bike Show.
Mr Cottle has also worked on Country Fairs and Antique Fair events through the Association, and been involved with Neighbourhood Watch (now Neighbourhood Support) for 25 years, assisting the Shannon Police in reducing petty crime.
