Youth Scholarships
In 2004 Horowhenua District Council's Youth Council initiated 10 Youth Scholarships of $200 each to encourage youth in the community with Sport, the Arts, Cultural and Academic Achievements to help achieve or further their goals (these are now known as "Performing Scholarships"). In 2010 a further five scholarships of $200 for Community Service were introduced for young people in Horowhenua. These Community Service Scholarships are for 12- 24 year-olds who have demonstrated a high level of commitment and contribution to our community.
2011 Youth Scholarships
Applications for the 2011 Youth Scholarships closed on Friday, 23 September 2011.
Performing Scholarships
Performing Scholarships are designed to help youth in the Horowhenua reach their potential and can be utilised to fund activities that applicants are participating in such as sports, arts, cultural and academic. Club, school or church group trips or camps are not eligible for a Youth Scholarship.
Community Service Scholarships
Community Service Scholarships are for 12- 24 year-olds who have demonstrated a high level of commitment and contribution to our community.
Important Dates
Youth Scholarship Applications closed on Friday, 23 September 2011.
A presentation of the scholarship awards will be held on Wednesday, 30 November 2011.

2010 Youth Scholarship Recipients
Fifteen Youth Scholarships were awarded to Horowhenua students in 2010, for either sporting or artistic excellence, and community service. The $200 scholarships were presented at the Horowhenua District Council Chambers on 30 November 2010.
Recipients were:
Courtney Evans, 14, Horowhenua College (Swimming)
Courtney is the top Manawatu swimmer in her age group.
Anton Paulin, 13, Waiopehu College (Hockey)
Anton has been in the Horowhenua and Manawatu rep hockey teams.
Renee Bacon, 14, Horowhenua College (Football)
Renee is the only girl in the 14th grade soccer team in the Wellington Junior Premier League.
James Hoskins, 17, Waiopehu College (Music, Community Service)
James is the music director for the college’s Stage Challenge, sings in the choir, is Head Boy, student representative on the Board of Trustees, and coaches the senior girls football team.
Jamie Berquist, 14, Waiopehu College (Hockey)
Jamie has represented Horowhenua as an age group hockey player for five years.
Dion Sanson, 17, Horowhenua College (Cricket/Hockey)
Dion has made the age-grade cricket reps for seven years.
Danielle MacKay, 15, Horowhenua College (Rowing)
Danielle takes part in golf, badminton, surf lifesaving, netball, canoe polo and rowing. She is also profoundly deaf.
Alicia Lineham, 17, Manawatu College (Music)
Alicia plays the piano and guitar and also sings. She reached the regional Rockquest finals two years in a row.
Arran Smith, 17, Horowhenua College (Rowing)
Arran will row for Wellington in four events at Interprovincial Champs.
Joshua Royal, 17, Horowhenua College (Rowing)
Joshua has won the Wellington regional age-group sculls title and North Island U17 single scull title.
Brooke Hori Te Pa-Philips, 13, Levin Intermediate (Community Service)
Brooke plays a range of sports but is also actively involved in her Marae community.
Willie Paia’aua, Waiopehu College (Community Service)
Willie leads the college’s Pasifika Fusion Group, plays rep 7s rugby for Horowhenua, is in Waiopehu College’s top rugby team and league teams, and is a champion sprinter.
Levi Tate (Community Service)
Levi has been a volunteer lifeguard at Waitarere Beach for two years.
Ali Rogers, Horowhenua College (Community Service)
Ali fundraises for Canteen, National Breast Cancer Foundation, Plunket, Foodbank and other causes.
