Youth Activation Fund

This fund aims to provide costs for equipment and other associated fees, without which the young people would not be able to participate. Sport, cultural, learning, and community volunteering are all activities which young people can apply for assistance.

Trialling New Approaches to Social Sector Change – Youth Community Action Plan

Levin Youth Community Action PlanHorowhenua is just one of six communities in New Zealand that have been selected to take part in an innovative two-year pilot programme aimed at improving outcomes for young people aged 12 – 18 years.

Backed by the ministries of Social Development, Justice, Education and Health and the New Zealand Police, the Levin Community Youth Initiative, or 'The Trials’ as the overall project is known, is looking at implementing a new approach to supporting young people to achieve positive life outcomes by working in partnership with families, whanau and the wider community.

Horowhenua District Council has taken a lead role in this project and is providing leadership through both the governance group, project team and sub groups.

Key outcomes of the trial

The four key outcomes of the trial are to achieve are

  1. Reducing truancy rates.
  2. Reducing offending by young people.
  3. Reducing levels of alcohol and other substance abuse in young people.
  4. Increasing the number of young people in education, training and employment.
