Found Dogs

Dogs are lost and found throughout the District on a daily basis. Some are reunited with their owner straight away, whereas some are taken to the Council's dog pound to await its owner.

Our Animal Control staff take all practical steps to reunite the 'found' dog with their owner. If the dog is registered or microchipped, identifying its owner is more simple, and the dog is reunited quite quickly. If not registered or microchipped, the task is a little more difficult.

In the event of a dog being impounded, we are required to hold the dog for at least seven days clear. In this time, our staff make enquiries to try and track the possible owner and in some cases the owner has already contacted us to see if we have picked it up.

If an owner has not come forward, careful consideration is given to disposing of it as unfortunately there are times where we cannot find an owner or no one comes forward to claim a dog.

If you find a lost dog, please contact Council straight away on 06 3660999 and advise the details so we can reunite the lost dog with its owner as soon as practicable.
