The horizontal bore which pumps water to the Levin Pump Station has been a saving grace for the wider Levin area and allowed further restrictions to be held off until now.
The continuing dry weather conditions has made water supply scarce for Horowhenua towns and surrounding rural areas hooked up to town supply.
Horowhenua District Council requires residents in Levin to reduce their water use including using a hand-held hose to water the garden.
Tokomaru and Shannon and its surrounding areas are restricted to using hand held hoses for the garden or if using sprinklers, to use it on alternate days.
Measures for reducing water use as well as eliminating water wastage are being advised.
HDC Utilities Engineer Ken Hale said it is surprising how much water could be lost through small continuous leaks.
"Every leak that can be stopped should make a worthwhile difference."
Water recycling is happening at several Council facilities and any leaks are being attended to as soon as possible. Everyone needs to make a real effort to reduce our water use.
Other Council initiatives were in Levin's recreation areas with Playford Park, Loaded Hog Domain including Gladys Taylor Park, and Donnelly Park sourcing water for irrigation from bores.
