No Big Box Retail for Levin But Zone Change Approved

An independent commissioner delegated to view the Tararua Road private plan change application has approved it, as noted by the Horowhenua District Council at its meeting on 5 March 2008.

The proposal to rezone rural land to industrial and residential land on the north side of Tararua Road was originally to include "big box" retail, however the developers withdrew that portion of the application in September last year.

The commissioner's decision means the change will give businesses built in the industrial area all the rights that go with industrial zoning including limited retail rights of up to 25 per cent of floor space of any property, subject to a further resource consent process.

Due to Council's interest in land adjacent to the Tararua Road proposal, delegated authority was given to the independent commissioner.

The approval, subject to any appeal, will amend the Operative Horowhenua District plan.

A letter advising of the decision has been sent to the applicant, all submitters and petitioners.
