Levin Town Clock To Get Major Upgrade
Levin's town clock, positioned above the Levin Post Office, is in need of an upgrade as obsolete and irreparable parts cause ongoing problems.
The clock and spire was installed in 1999 by the Levin Rotary Club through voluntary effort and fundraising. After its installation, Council agreed to take over the maintenance and operations of the clock.
Parks Assets Officer Doug Tate said the clock's main controller, clock motors, and temperature panels have all suffered irreparable damage and require upgrading.
"Some items cannot be replaced due to being obsolete and new parts are incompatible with existing controls and mechanisms."
It is expected the upgrades will cost $66,500.
In the 2008/2009 Annual Plan, $35,000 of Council funds was approved towards the upgrade of the clock mechanisms and structure. The clock face will be changed to open internally for maintenance without the requirement of a crane for access, The clock motors, master controller, temperature gauges and panels will be replaced, and night illumination will be improved.
Panelbeating, painting and repairs to the spire's exterior, caused by damage from the crane bucket, is also proposed.
Additional funds are being sought from charitable trusts and organisations to cover the balance of the $66,500 upgrade.
