Nothing But Good Times

More than 250 pairs of skates are not enough to keep up with the mania sweeping through the town's youth when doors open at the Events Centre on Friday nights.

Every week Nothing But Wheels cranks into action with a team of dedicated volunteers hiring out skates or allowing entry to up to 450 young people and some parents on any given night.

NBW Operations Manager Benita Martin says the skating revival has been growing since the doors opened less than four months ago and at $5.00 a head for entry and skate hire, it is one of the most affordable ways for families to have fun. People with their own skates are charged a $3.00 entry fee.

Ms Martin says the town hasn't seen anything like it for more than a decade when youth used to head to Skatetown in Exeter Street.

"We are now seeing some pretty good adults showing their moves and helping the young ones. It's good to watch that mentoring."

A typical evening has participants playing games, skating to music, a light show, prizes and cash giveaways.

Friday night sessions are split into two levels with beginners and those under 10-years-old skating from 5.30pm until 7.00pm, and teens and adults from 7.30pm to 10.00pm.

"As word spread, parents are bringing children from Paraparaumu and Palmerston North for the evening, and many regular skaters are well into their 40's," Ms Martin says.

School holiday sessions from 6 July 2009 are scheduled with day sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday of both weeks from 1.00pm to 3.00pm, and also the normal Friday night sessions. Holiday passes cost $25 each or standard entry fees apply.

Ms Martin says more volunteers are needed and she would love to hear from people who are willing to give up their Friday evening. She can be contacted on 06 368 6840 or 027 3838 427.
