Arbor Day Leaves Levin Greener

Keep Levin Beautiful, in partnership with Horowhenua District Council, has planted native trees around the edge of the Village Green to celebrate Arbor Day.

The plantings on Friday 5 June 2009 were supervised by Council Parks Assets Officer Doug Tate and undertaken by Mayor Brendan Duffy, volunteers from Keep Levin Beautiful and contractors.

The selection of native trees, including kauri, titoki, rimu, totara and liquidambar, were chosen to represent linkages to other nearby sites of significance in the area.

Keep Levin Beautiful chairman Tony Rush says his group shares the philosophy behind Arbor Day – beautifying the environment.

“The Village Green is an iconic site, one of Levin’s jewels, but it was also a very bare patch of green. At the height of summer there was no shading, reducing the ability for Levin’s citizens to enjoy picnics and other activities on the green,” he says.

The trees will grow to more than 25m, giving good shade cover for generations to come.
