What's in a whitebait fritter?

Tuesday, 26 July 2011

With whitebait season about to begin on August 15th, a couple of keen whitebait enthusiasts from the community came up with an idea to gather some like-minded people together to talk about what can be done at a local level to help protect the whitebait fishery.

So, a whitebait hui, open to anybody, will be held on Wednesday, 3 August at the Te Kawau Memorial Recreation Centre in Rongotea, from 6.30pm.  Stella McQueen, a student at Massey University studying for her Masters in freshwater ecology, will talk about the native fish species that make up the whitebait catch, and the things that are threatening them. Then, over supper, there will be a chance to chat about what can be done to help ensure there is whitebait around for future generations to enjoy.
