Make a StandIf you want to have a say in the future of your region find out more about how you can stand to become a community board member, councillor or mayor?

The Horowhenua District Council is holding two workshops for prospective candidates in this year’s local government elections on Thursday 22 July 2010.  The first of these will be at 5.30 pm in the Council Chambers, HDC Offices, Oxford Street, Levin.  The second will commence at 7.30 pm in the Boardroom at the Foxton Service Centre, Main Street, Foxton.

“This is an opportunity for people interested in standing in the 2010 elections to learn more about the nomination and election processes and the roles of councils and elected members.  It’s also a chance to have any questions answered as Warwick Lampp, Council's Electoral Officer will also be attending the briefings,” says David Ward, Chief Executive of the Horowhenua District Council.

“Local government is local democracy.  This is fundamental to giving the opportunity for everyone’s voice to be heard.  The mayor and councillors take on a leadership role in the Horowhenua district representing the views of the community.

“We need a range of people of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds to represent the diversity of our community.

“Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll.”

Nominations for candidates for the Mayor and ten Councillors, elected across four wards, and the five Community Board members, open on 23 July 2010 and close on 20 August 2010.  Voting papers will be sent out from 17 September 2010 and must be returned by Election Day, 9 October 2010.
