Lake Horowhenua - The Way Forward
Tuesday, 27 July 2010
Horowhenua Mayor Brendan Duffy is very supportive of the outcomes of Monday's meeting on the condition of Lake Horowhenua. Speaking from Auckland where he is attending the Local Government Annual Conference Mayor Duffy acknowledged the many members of our community who attended the meeting to show their strong support for this strategic local asset.
He said the meeting echoed the very strong views on the Lake that he and other affected parties recently voiced to the Conservation Minister during her visit to Levin.
There are a number of parties who are involved in the management and operation of the Lake including the Department of Conservation, the Lake Trustees, recreational users, Horizons Regional Council and Horowhenua District Council.
In any discussion on the future of the Lake it is important that we recognise and show respect to the Lake owners with whom we enjoy a good relationship.
I am confident that I have the support of my fellow Councillors to lead a concerted approach to addressing Lake issues. This will start with me co-coordinating a meeting of those who have ownership or legislative interest.
My desired outcome from such a meeting will be to identify a clear, acceptable and affordable pathway forward aimed at returning the Lake to a truly unique local facility, able to be enjoyed by all of the residents of our district.
