Historic Courthouse Renovation Progressing
Tuesday, 23 February 2010
Work on Levin’s historic courthouse, now situated in the Levin Rose Gardens, is progressing well and being helped along by the work of Community Max participants.
Local builder Rod Feasey and painter Steve Halliday were recently employed to handle the renovation work and five Community Max workers are working alongside and learning valuable skills in the process.
Community Max is a central government initiative through Work and Income which supports the completion of community projects that benefit the community or the environment and would otherwise not be done. The project is being managed by Barry Kinchin for Horowhenua District Council.
Since October 2009, work on the Courthouse has involved stripping out the inside linings of the old courtroom and rebuilding the western wall and ceiling structure. Outside, the team has been replacing old and missing weatherboards and preparing the building for painting.
Rod and Steve are also passing on valuable skills to the Community Max team.
Horowhenua District Council Project Manager Barry Kinchin says the project is near to completion, with the official re-opening planned for 7 March 2010.
