Community Groups Link Education Ideas

A forum of educators from across the Horowhenua District have endorsed the Horowhenua District Council Education Strategy by jointly proposing agreed goals, actions and desired outcomes.
The group endorsed the provision of good foundations through participation in early childhood education and focused on the importance of all students achieving academically as a sound foundation for their learning. The importance of Maori students succeeding academically and culturally was agreed as well as ensuring preparedness for, and successful transition to further study and work.
Attendees at the 2009 forum on November 19, included a range of educators and community representatives from the Horowhenua District Council, Muaupoko Tribal Authority, Te Iwi o Ngati Tukorehe Trust, the early childhood sector, the Horowhenua Principals’ Association, the tertiary and adult education sector and community members from a range of backgrounds with an interest in education.
An example of the combined groups lending support to a number of education initiatives that require cross-sector and community co-ordination is the establishment of a Youth Transition Service (to work or further study) in the Horowhenua.
One outcome from the forum was an agreed draft strategy which now enables the development group to plan for particular projects to implement the objectives outlined in the strategic plan and to seek support for the detail and outcomes.
