Pirate Invasion at Levin Aquatic Centre

Thursday, 24 June 2010

Move over Johnny Depp and Peter Pan, there was a whole new batch of pirates hatched at the Big Pirate Splash at the Levin Aquatic Centre on Saturday night.

Over two hundred eye-patched children rollicked in the Levin pools under the supervision of staff and without their parents for two fun-packed hours. Christine Belsham, pools manager, says “this was one of the best events we’ve had here and the enthusiasm of our new pool staff was infectious. When we closed the doors at 8pm after 2 hours of full-on activity, we knew we’d cracked it” she said.

Mayor Brendan Duffy adds ‘the big pirate splash gives our middle-school children from 8-12 years a chance to socialise and have fun in a well-managed environment. The night was well structured and easily catered for the age differences of the children who attended. Without parents there, the kids step up socially and learn some independence in a safe place” he says.

The huge inflatable rope swing, brought in for the night, was as popular as the floating log and the treasure hunt prizes. There’s no doubt the young pirates slept as well as the Aquatic Centre crew last Saturday night.
