Community Connection 28 November 2009

This edition of Community Connection concentrates on economic development and celebrates businesses and people achieving in our District.

The Electra Business Awards are a brilliant example of excellence among the business people in both Horowhenua and Kapiti. Horowhenua businesses faired well with Turk’s Poultry being named Business of the Year and Colbert Cooper coming a close second.

It was great to see the interest and enthusiasm shown by the wider Foxton community to the plans and visions for the town. Speakers at a public meeting last Tuesday talked about changes and enhancements that they believed would draw people to the Foxton ‘hub’ who would otherwise drive straight past the township on State Highway 1.

It was a chance for the 200 people who attended to hear about the project first hand and form their own opinion on how they want their town to move forward. Does the town want to be a tourist destination and draw businesses and people to Foxton?

We had more than 100 people celebrate as certificates were given for 23 apprentices who had completed their studies. Unlike their university peers, these people wouldn’t normally celebrate in grand fashion despite putting in hard yards
becoming skilled at their chosen area of interest and studying towards certification. Congratulations to all our apprentices.

There is only one more edition of the Community Connection due out before Christmas. In the next issue, we will look at security and safety for our homes over the holiday break, we’ll talk to the Beach Wardens to find out how we can help, and highlight the events coming up in the early part of next year.
