Tourism & Visitor Information
The Horowhenua district lies approximately one hour north of Wellington (the capital city) on State Highway One. It’s bounded by the Tararua Ranges in the east and the Tasman Sea in the west.
Horticulture is the main way of life for this region, thanks to the rich alluvial soils and mild temperate climate. The area is known as the ‘market garden’ of the lower North Island. Dairy farming is also very important.
In total contrast, the town of Levin has a thriving clothing industry - it’s a good place to pick up a stylish bargain from one of the many factory shops.
