Shannon Cemetery
Shannon Cemetery is one of two District rural Cemeteries. The first interment took place in 1893, making it the districts third oldest cemetery and continues to be used on a regular basis by the same early colonial families as the resting place for departed loved ones.
The Cemetery has colonial charm with its rustic stone pillars and historic graves with many prominent early settlers from the Shannon Area buried in the Cemetery.
The Cemetery offers a historical retreat into the areas local history, with a large number of historic graves.
Location
Entry to the Cemetery is from:
- Brown Street, Shannon.
- Located 1.5 km’s south west of Shannon Town Ship.
Hours
Shannon Cemetery is open daily from dawn to dusk.
Records
Records are available for viewing at the District Council Offices in Levin and a search/viewing fee is applicable.
Maintenance
In order to undertaken any grave maintenance, you must first obtain a permit from Council.
