CEMETERIES
Horowhenua District Council operates five cemeteries, two located in Levin (Avenue and Old Levin Cemetery), Manakau, Shannon and Foxton.
The Council aims to provide a number of services for burials and cremations to meet a range of bereavement needs, and a respectful environment and professional assistance to support family and friends of deceased people.
The administration of burials or ashes interments, visitor needs and any ongoing cemetery services are handled by:

Open Hours
The cemeteries are open from 7.30am until dusk year - round.
Burial and cremation services normally occur Monday - Friday, 8.00am - 4.00pm and Saturdays 9am - 12pm. Special arrangements can be made for weekends or public holidays. These bookings must be approved by Council and incur an additional cost.
Booking Burials and Cremations
Phone the District Offices or Foxton Offices as soon as possible to ensure the availability of dates. Staff can make provisional time bookings for services.
No booking is confirmed until all relevant documentation is received by Council. Please contact Council for relevant booking forms required.
Upon receiving bookings, Council will confirm all relevant details with a Cemetery Warrant for interment.

Council requires all documentation at least 24 hours before any interment or service.
Records and Genealogical Information
Council holds in perpetuity cemetery records for the district. Records dating back to 1867 at Foxton Cemetery, 1892 at Manakau Cemetery, 1894 at Old Levin Cemetery, 1893 at Shannon Cemetery and 1974 at the Avenue Cemetery are available for public viewing.
Some records for the Avenue and Manakau Cemeteries are available from an online database viewable at www.library.org.nz/resources/cemetery.
Other records are available for viewing at the District Council Offices in Levin and Foxton and a search/viewing fee is applicable.
Council are working towards a database to allow viewing of all cemetery records. Completion date of this system for public access is proposed for February 2009.
Cemetery Maintenance
Maintenance and Sexton duties are provided by the Districts Parks and Open Spaces Contractor and responsibilities include keeping the cemeteries in a tidy and presentable manner, as well as managing burials.
Cemetery maintenance is provided on all plots in cemeteries, however headstones and tombstone tops are the responsibility of families. In order to do maintenance to any headstone or tombstone a permit must first be obtained from Council.
