FOXTON
Foxton is the birthplace of the Manawatu with a population of over 2,500. It has a surprisingly large retail centre, and a variety of industries including light engineering and high-quality John Deere rural machinery and various rural endeavours including a large daffodil growing business.
Foxton is not typical of the small New Zealand town in that it owes little of its existence to the surrounding farmland. Its beginnings are linked with the Bible, the first European to settle here was a Presbyterian minister. Flax was also important to the growth of the town – at one time 50 mills were operating within a 16 km radius of Foxton.
Visitor attractions include the unique authentic Dutch Windmill which produces flour as a by-product, a variety of museums, including a trolley bus museum, history museum, audio visual museum and flax stripping museum that relates to the historical flax industry of the past. There are unique gift shops including a pottery factory shop, a doll gallery and golf course, or take a ride on the horse-drawn tram or double-decker bus past some of the historic sites. To get a birds-eye view of this interesting area scenic flights are available.
Foxton also has its own Radio station, Radio Foxton 99.1 FM.
A main feature of the town is the variety of large murals that abound and create much interest with visitors and locals alike, with a selection of cafes to sit in and gaze at this amazing sight.
