From the Mountain peaks to the sea, inclusive of the boundaries known to Tukorehe, for all his descendants and inter-related dependents

From my standing place upon the lofty peaks of the Tararua Ranges, I look towards the peaks that frame my view of our region, they are Otararere, Poroporo and Pukeatua.

My eyes behold the springs that nurture our lands by their many tributaries which are the Waikokopu, Kuku, Tikorangi, Mangananao and the Ohau Awa.

As the land holds my gaze I am reminded of those tribes who make up this area that is known as Ngāti Tukorehe, they are Te Mateawa, Te Rangitawhia, Ngāti Manu and Ngāti Kapumanawawhiti

Ngāti Tukorehe established Te Iwi O Ngāti Tukorehe Trust, a Charitable organisation established in 1989 to manage the strategic and developmental aspirations of the iwi.   The Trust manages the iwi Treaty Claim and other government contracted projects such as, te reo Maori revitalisation, Alternative Education and a growing number of business ventures.

Ngāti Tukorehe have one of the few Maori owned Private Training Establishments in Aotearoa, and deliver Tikanga, Language and Maori worldview based programs from Tukorehe marae. This has created many ongoing relations with organisations across the Pacific including Hawaii, and the University of Wyoming.

Ngāti Tukorehe also played a large role in conservation by setting aside a wetlands restoration reserve on its tribal farm Tahamata Inc. The kawenata or covenant that protects this wetlands area has been used as a blueprint for other wetland conservation activity regionally.

Horowhenua District Council and Ngāti Tukorehe Partnership

Council entered into a Memorandum of Partnership with Te Iwi O Ngāti Tukorehe Trust on 19 November 2008.  Te Iwi O Ngāti Tukorehe Trust presented Council with a cloak to mark the occasion of the signing of the Memorandum of Partnership, which has been subsequently used at Council's Civic Honours Ceremonies and other such significant events.  A Review of the partnership in 2016 indicated that both parties continue to value the partnership.
